After years of struggling with my weight and yo-yo dieting, one day in March 2013 I decided it was time to make a change. I signed up for a 7am boxing class and marched right in, determined. I was commuting from Long Island into Manhattan for work, so making those morning classes were tough, but it got easier to wake up once I was seeing results and had something to look forward to. After about 6 months, I was seeing my body and mind change. I was making new fitness friends and had joined a community with the same goals and passions as me. Seeing their smiling faces every morning kept me motivated! I kept boxing until I was hitting a plateau, and then boxing turned to bootcamp, then spinning, then running, then TRX… the possibilities were endless.
Roughly a year after I had started my journey, I decided to chronicle my experiences through Instagram and @sweatandheels was born. It all happened on a train ride back to Long Island from a spin class at New York Sports Club. The name is a combination of my professional career in public relations and a passion for fitness, aka, SWEAT! I had taken a picture of myself on a spin bike and posted it on Instagram and a light bulb went off -- could I use social media as a tool for inspiring myself and others? I was texting with my friends, trying to gather opinions, brainstorming names back and forth, and @sweatandheels was one of the first ones I thought of - and it stuck. Little did I know, this new name would become my hobby and passion. I started sharing photos immediately - work outs, selfies, meal preps, tips, and eventually... transformations. I felt the love from the fitness community on Instagram, which is unlike any other. People really do follow along, take the time to read, comment, and even try out your tips! It's amazing the support that flows in on a day-to-day basis.
I wanted to inspire others to make a change, just like I was doing. I wanted to show others that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and put in the hard work. I share positive quotes, transformation photos, music tips, my meal prep menus, and real-time workout and training updates! Now, in 2017 – I am proud to say that I have lost over 60 pounds, participated in three 10k races, and three half-marathons.
By sharing my story and proving nothing is impossible, I hope to change at least one person's life. In my personal journey, I have learned that a positive attitude is key, and you can do anything you set your mind to. I don't surround myself with people who don't want the same things as me or understand my end goal, and I have had to do a lot of soul searching to figure out that sometimes you have to say no to others and say yes to yourself.
I continue to learn about myself each and every day, and can’t wait to share my knowledge with each of you. Years into my health and wellness journey, I am still finding the balance. It's not easy, but it's worth it. Join me.
